Yesterday we told our kids that they could have a break from cleaning their rooms because it was Sunday. They were told that they had to clean their rooms on Monday instead. Kellen told us that he didn't have to clean his room because it was Martin Luther King Day. Tom and I both told him we didn't care if it was a holiday, but he needed to clean his room because he already got the day off. Here is what happened next....
Kellen: Yeah, but I am tan.
Me: What does you being tan have to do with not having to clean your room?
Kellen: I am tan and you are pale.
Me: What does that have to do with cleaning your room?
Kellen: It doesn't have to do with cleaning my room. Martin Luther King made it so dark people could be free from the light skinned people. I am more tan. I am darker than you. I get the day off on MLK day because tan people do not have to work.
Me: Oh my gosh!! Where did you get that?
Kellen: Mom, it's Martin Luther King day. You are pale so you have to work.
Um, right....
Needless to say, I am writing this blog post right now and he is currently cleaning his room. We will also be reminding our tan son that he still has to clean his room, even on civil rights holidays.
