Watermelon

Here is the latest conversation that I overheard today between Katie and Kellen.

Kellen: I stayed dry last night and I am a big boy!

Katie: Great job, Kellen.

Kellen: Well, I think it's because I ate watermelon seeds the other day.

Katie: You know Kellen, eating watermelon seeds does not mean a watermelon is going to grow in your tummy.

Kellen: Oh really?

Katie: Yeah, sorry.

Kellen: That's okay Katie.

On our way home...

After our wonderful stay at the Everett's home for the 4th of July it was time to get back home. Just two minutes on the freeway the check engine light went on. Ugh! Tom felt that we should go to St. George and check it. Turns out it was the transmission. When we gave the mechanic our keys he told us the worst case scenario would be $2,200 to $2,600. He was pretty sure that our problem was minimal and that it would be fixed in no time. Well not this time. We have had some bad luck lately and sure enough our fix was going to cost us $2,600. The parts were about $800.00 and the rest was labor. Man mechanics sure charge a lot for their time. Can you tell I am still a little irritated?!

Here is what we are grateful for....we were just outside of town when the light came on and not in the middle of the desert. We were able to go back to the Everett's house to stay while we waited and did not have to pay for a hotel and food. We were also able to help do some family names in the temple while we waited. Would I rather have the $2,600?! Yes!!! However, being apart of completing someone's work was priceless.

4th of July

Every year for the past three years Tom's parents have hosted a 4th of July party at their house. Each neighbor contributes money towards the meal and also bring a side dish. Ted (Tom's dad) also buys a large amount of fireworks that we watch after dinner.

Here we are eating. Notice Tom in the right hand corner. He has two water guns in his hands. He was squirting everyone during dinner.

Here he is again just ready to spray anyone who isn't already wet. It was so hot and humid outside that being sprayed felt really good!

During dinner the kids also had some time to decorate their bikes, scooters, roller blades, etc. Here is Kellen's creation.

Emma (cousin) and Katie had matching hair for the 4th. Katie loves, loves her cousin Emma! She had the best time playing princesses, making crafts, and reading with her cousin.
Here is their matching hair from the back. It took a little while to do but the girls looked so cute throughout the day!

Here is Katie's 4th of July scooter creation.
This was only a portion of the group that came to eat that night.

Kellen wanted to pose a few times with his scooter.

No blog post would be complete without Kellen showing us his tongue.

Toward the end of the night the kids put on a parade for all the adults. They just kept riding up and down the street until we kicked them off to do fireworks.

There they go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oops, sorry that this picture is a bit fuzzy.

Go Kellen!

Fireworks. They were a lot bigger than pictured here but you get the idea, right?!

Just a portion of the audience watching the awesome firework show.

Yay!

Hiking in Kanarravile

We went to St. George, UT to visit Tom's parents for the 4th of July. While we were there we went on a hike with cousins, aunts and uncles in Kanarraville, UT. It was really, really pretty. The water was super cold and moving at a pretty rapid rate! A good portion of the hike was in the water and we grew to love the refreshing water. It was a beautiful day and a wonderful hike!

Camping in the family room

During the summer we like to camp in the family room because it is so stinking hot outside! Tom and I put up the tent and Kellen took it upon himself to make the bed. By the time he was finished, he put every single blanket and pillow that we own. It was so comfy!

Before Kellen set up the bed we make pizzas and ate in the tent. It was such a fun night!

Chicken coop

My mom and brother recently adopted 4 chickens. Scott, my mom, and I started to build a chicken coop. It took about two days to build and now the chickens want nothing to do with it. They are happy roaming in the backyard.

I know that I am not sitting a lady like manner. Truthfully, I didn't care. I was trying to saw wood and was having very little luck.

The frame of the coop.

The coop was coming together very nicely at this point. I went and bought a mister for my mom and her chickens. We put chicken wire on the open parts of the coop. My brother put in some nice bedding at the bottom. I think we did a pretty awesome job, especially since we have never built anything like this before!
